Police said the murder occurred early on Thursday at Kalkini Upazila’s Sahebrampur Union.

The victim, identified as Abul Kalam alias Kalu Shikder, was campaigning for independent chairman candidate Assaduzzaman Jamal Mollah, for the polls slated for May 7.

Kalkini police OC Kripa Sindhu Bala said that unidentified men called Kalam outside his home before slashing him with sharp weapons. He was rushed to the local hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

“Five suspects, who are supporters of Awami League nominated candidate, have been held after initial investigations. We came to know that the killing was the sequel to a turf war,” he said.

No comments were available from the ruling party candidate Kamrul Hasan Selim.
