Local Government Secretary Abdul Malek was briefing reporters on Wednesday about

the measures aimed at managing wastes that pile up after animals are slaughtered on Eid-ul-Azha.

There were 324 such temporary centres at Dhaka South City Corporation and 204 more at Dhaka North City Corporation.

Authorities say they will specify more places for sacrificing animals in the

capital before Eid-ul-Azha is celebrated around mid-September this year.

There are 11 city corporations and 325 municipalities throughout Bangladesh. The municipalities will soon have special places designated for slaughtering animals, said Secretary Malek.

As for not making their use mandatory, he said, “It’s a religious festival, we

cannot force anyone. We will keep making requests, even if that means going to their doorsteps.”

“We have designated spots because we want clean and hygienic sacrifices.”

The authorities had demarcated 558 spots in Dhaka’s two city corporations last year but they were mostly neglected as people continued to slaughter sacrificial animals wherever they pleased.

A total of 360 imams and 275 butchers have been listed for the spots in

south Dhaka. Another 336 imams and 205 butchers will be in the spots at north.

There were now 387 spots at Chittagong, 155 in Khulna, 190 in Narayanganj, 414 at Gazipur, 150 at Rajshahi, 33 in Rangpur, 140 in Barisal and 27 in Sylhet.

Spots inside Comilla were not announced since no official from the city corporation there was present in the meeting at the Secretariat.
