Customs seizes luxury Audi R8 because of duty evasion

Customs intelligence has seized a luxury Audi R8 in Banani on grounds of duty evasion.

The white vehicle was seized from the garage of Versatile Automobiles on Road-7 at Banani Block-G on Wednesday, said Moinul Khan, Director General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate.
 
He said customs intelligence officials had been watching the unregistered car for a couple of days, as the owner had ducked a huge duty when the vehicle was brought in from the UK.
 
Moinul said, “The vehicle was cleared at the Mongla port by declaring it as a 2,500cc Audi TT though it is a 5,200cc vehicle.
 
“Duty amounting to about Tk 85 million was evaded by giving a false declaration about the car’s (engine) cc, model, and other details.”
 
Imported by automobile trading firm Auto One, the car’s chassis number is WUAZZZ424CN000185.
 
The official said preparations were on to file a case over the fraud.
 
In the past month, he said, over 100 luxury cars were running in Bangladesh by exploiting the special incentives for tourists.
 
Earlier, the customs intelligence had seized several cars of famous brands such as BMW and Mercedes Benz from various locations on similar charges.
