Bagerhat Fire Service’s Deputy Assistant Director Md Manikuzzaman said that the fire was controlled around 12pm. on Saturday after three days of intense effort.

Sundarbans ’ Eastern Division’s Forest Officer Saidul Islam said the fire has now been completely tamed and no report of smokes billowing out was received from any part of the Chandpai Range.

“But the fire service was still monitoring the area closely,” he told bdnews24.com.

Meanwhile, the forest department has started a case with a Bagerhat court on Saturday over the fire. So far, they have filed three cases over fires that erupted in the area in the last one month.

“We believe there have been three incidents of arson recently. Those who had done that also set fire to the forest in at least 20 spots in the forest,” said Islam.

He said that Saturday’s fire, which took three days to put out, destroyed over three acres of the forest.
