Both his sons have been charged with murdering their parents, but the eldest son has now confessed to killing his father, local media reported citing police documents submitted to the court.

Friends called police after finding Golam Rabbi and his wife Shamima Rabbi dead in their San Jose house on Sunday. They were US citizens with roots in Bangladesh.

Police arrested 22-year-old Hasib bin Golam Rabbi and his 17-year-old brother Omar bin Golam Rabbi over the killings of the couple, who had emigrated from Bangladesh three decades ago.

ABC News reported that San Jose Police Sergeant Partcik Guire mentioned in court documents that Hasib said he shot his father several times, but did not shoot his mother.

Hasib also said a stranger who assaulted him told him to shoot his father, according to police.

The report quoted Guire as saying that the younger son Omar told investigators that his brother killed both parents.

"...and then  Hasib asked Omar to check the garage where his father had been killed to make sure no blood was seeping out before the two drove off to an anime convention in Oakland,” says the ABC News report.

The younger brother, who has been charged as an adult, did not mention a stranger, said police.

The police statement did not mention what might have motivated the murder.

The brothers pleaded not guilty, ABC News said quoting a spokesperson for the district attorney's office.

In a jailhouse interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, the elder son Hasib said that he wanted ‘everyone to know what happened’ and emphasised that his brother was innocent.

“The best thing if anyone wants to know what happened is to wait for the trial,” he told the newspaper with one hand cuffed to his side and the other holding a phone in the interview room at Santa Clara County Jail.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people attended the funeral prayer for the couple on Friday at the Muslim Community Association in Santa Clara.

The Rabbi couple were members of the Evergreen Islamic Center and were described as “simple, gentle souls” by friends.
