"Savings certificate continues to gain popularity among the people, thereby increasing government debt," he conceded on Wednesday.

The first nine months of the current fiscal registered a 55 percent rise in savings certificate sales compared with the last fiscal.

Net sales of savings certificates have also gone up to Tk 231.88 billion from Tk 211.88 billion of the same period last year.

The interest payable by the government has gone up by 55 percent in the past nine months.

This has increased the debt burden on the government, believes economics analyst Zaid Bakht.

Bakht puts the rise in savings certificate popularity down to the absence of better avenues of disinvestment available with the people.
