Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina launched it on the National Legal Aid Day on Thursday.

“We took this initiative to ensure people at grassroots level can get legal aid,” she said at a ceremony organised at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.

She then called 16430 and asked about the services offered.

People whose annual income do not exceed Tk 50,000 or those with partial or no earning capacity will qualify for the free services.

Freedom fighters who are unemployed or do not earn beyond Tk 75,000, recipients of the government’s elderly allowance or poor mothers with VGD (Vulnerable Group Development) cards can also receive assistance.

“Under trial prisoners who are languishing in jails without any serious charges against them could secure release only if they can get some legal aid,” the prime minister said.

“We can take those measures, we need to do it,” she added.
