1 killed in ‘encounter’ with police in Kushtia

A man, accused in several cases, has been killed in an ‘encounter’ with police at Kushtia town.

Police said the incident occurred in the Housing Math area near the Kushtia-Rajbarhi Road in the early hours of Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Amirul Islam, 42, son of Jober Mistiri of Sonaidanga village under Kushita Islami University Police Station.

Police said Amirul was accused in seven cases, including a few over murder and abduction, filed with different police stations.

Kushita ASP Joynul Abedin said a team of Detective Branch police rushed to the Housing Matha area after getting a tipoff that a gang of robbers was planning to commit robbery.

“The robbers started firing at police, prompting them to retaliate in self defence. Injured Amirul was rescued after other robbers fled,” he said.

According to Joynul, Amirul was rushed to Kushtia General Hospital where doctor pronounced him dead.

He said four arms, several rounds of bullet and locally made weapons were seized from the scene.
