In a statement from Brussels, where the 28-country bloc is headquartered, the EU said it “expects the government of Bangladesh to ensure freedom of expression as a fundamental human right and to promote respect”.

“It is also essential to ensure the protection and safety of all citizens.”

The call came on Tuesday after the murder of Xulhaz Mannan and Mahbub Rabbi Tonoy on Monday.
The attacks by unknown assailants also left a policeman and a security guard injured.
The EU expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

This was the third such attack within a month after a law student and secular online activist was hacked to death on Apr 6 in Dhaka, and a professor of English on Apr 23 at Rajshahi.

Brussels said thorough investigations into these killings were needed to bring those responsible to justice.
