Rajshahi University’s English professor AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee was hacked to death by miscreants on Saturday.

"Only leaders of the ruling party are safe. Even workers are murdered. Those seeking justice are either subjected to enforced disappearance or are killed", Sarker wrote on his status, updated hours after the murder.

“The government seems to be responsible for nothing else but probing conspiracies against their relatives,” Sarker said alluding to the arrest of journalist Shafik Rehman on allegations of plotting the abduction and murder of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy.

In 2013, Imran, as a Chhatra League member of Rangpur Medical College, became convener of Bloggers' and Online Activists' Network. During that time he also bagged the post of spokesperson of Ganajagaran Mancha.

He became a household name after spearheading the campaign demanding the highest punishment for war criminals.

However his criticism of the government following the arrest of Shafik Rehman led to his falling out with the ruling party.

Joy called him an opportunist and urged people to boycott him.

Hitting back Sarker wrote, "…the call for justice now leads to death threats."

On the recent spate of murders, Sarker wrote, "teachers, students, priests, everyone is being murdered and no one is safe. In this situation it doesn't matter if Dr Rezaul was a fundamentalist or a liberal minded person. That may matter for the government, not for a simpleton like me."
