Dhaka’s Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court judge Shamsun Nahar on Monday set May 8 as the new date.

The judge also scrapped Awami League MP Pinu Khan’s son Rony’s plea for the dropping of the charges.

State counsel SM Jahid Sardar told bdnews24.com plaintiff Monwara Begum was not present on Monday, though two other female witnesses were.

“However, we had to send them back as they were not ready to testify because they felt tired.”

The same court had indicted Rony on Mar 6 for the 2015 murders in capital Dhaka’s Eskaton, and fixed Apr 11 for witness deposition.

Auto-rickshaw driver Yakub Ali and rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim died of bullet wounds sustained in an indiscriminate firing in the early hours ofApr 14 last year.

Rony has been accused of firing, under the ‘influence of drugs’, from a car he was in.

The vehicle was registered in his mother’s name, who is also the general secretary of the Mohila Awami League, the ruling party's women’s front.

Hakim’s mother, Monwara Begum, on Apr 15 filed the murder case against some unidentified people.

Police arrested Rony from his Elephant Road residence on May 31.

On Jul 21 last year, police submitted the chargesheet, showing Rony as the sole accused.

Rony’s driver, Imran Fakir, and two of Rony’s friends, who were in the SUV at the time of the shooting, have testified against him in court.

A ballistic test also found that bullets from Rony’s pistol had killed Ali and Hakim.

Imran Fakir was arrested along with the MP’s son, but his name was dropped from the chargesheet after he testified against Rony.

The State has named 37 people as witnesses in the case.
