Police have identified him as ‘Sujon’, a third-year marketing student, who hails from Dhurail Union at Madaripur’s Sadar Upazila.

“Policemen were taking the ballots out after voting closed in the centre at Birangal Madrasa. Sujon suddenly snatched away a sack full of ballots and started to run,” said Madaripur Sadar Model police OC Ziaur Morshed on Thursday.

“Police fired blanks at first. He did not stop, so shots had to be fired. He died on the spot.”

But Sujon’s uncle, Faruk Mridha, said he died when police fired from their guns to stop two rival groups from fighting.
