Local police OC Md Ali Arshad said Ratan Mia, 35, died during an exchange of fire in the wee hours of Sunday at Baddaparha area of the Upazila.

He, however, could not say whether Mia was wanted in any case filed with the police.

According to OC Arshad, police raided the area on a tip-off of a ‘robbery on progress’. “The robbers opened fire, which forced the police to retaliate. Ratan’s (Mia) body was found at the spot after the robbers fled.”

A firearm, some ammunition and sharp weapons have been recovered from the spot, he added.

The police officer claimed he, himself along with Sub-inspector Abdul Alim and three other constables were injured in the 'shootout'.
