On his arrival on Sunday, he met the foreign minister, law minister, home minister and the foreign secretary among others.

He will also meet civil society members to discuss shared priority issues for the UK and Bangladesh, including illegal immigration, organised crime and violent extremism, the British High Commissioner has said.

This is his first visit to Bangladesh, and incidentally the first by a British Home Office Minister in the recently elected British government.

“I am delighted to be visiting Bangladesh,” Brokenshire was quoted as saying in a statement.

“We have a vibrant bilateral relationship, including our strong trade ties, and on this visit we hope to build on our joint efforts to combat the global threats of terrorism and illegal migration,” he said.

Added Brokenshire: “The UK is a long-standing partner and friend of Bangladesh. I am especially proud of the strong people to people ties that exist between the two countries through our half a million strong Bangladeshi diaspora”.

He will leave Dhaka on Monday.
