On the Shimulia-Kewarakandi route, the ferries were suspended for 10 hours and on the Paturia-Daulatdia route for three hours.

Air and water travel were also disrupted hugely on Friday midnight, at the end of the last day of winter, when thick fog covered capital Dhaka and several other areas of Bangladesh.

Ferry operations in the Shimulia-Kewarakandi route resumed around 9am on Saturday after being stopped at 11:30pm Friday, BIWTC’s Kewrakandi terminal Manager Abdus Salam told bdnews24.com.

The services were suspended to avoid accidents due to low visibility, he added.

Five ferries that were stuck mid-river with over 1,000 passengers overnight reached their destinations in the morning.

BIWTC’s Daulatdia terminal Manager Safiqul Islam said the ferry services in the Paturia-Daulatdia route resumed at around 9am.

The operations were stopped at 6am due to fog leaving 13 ferries stranded in the middle of the Padma River.

Earlier, the services were also suspended for three hours from 1am on this route.

In the wee hours of Saturday, three international flights had to land in Chittagong’s Shah Amanat International Airport instead of Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka because of the dense fog.

Shah Amanat International Airport Manager Wing Commander Reazul Kabir said the planes came from Kuala Lumpur and Kathmandu.

However, later in the early hours, two of the planes, one of Malindo Air and the other of Regent Airways left for Dhaka.
