The incident occurred around 4am on Thursday at Swastipur Village near the district town, said Kushtia based RAB unit’s Company Commander Mosaddek Ibne Mujib.

The deceased have been identified as Akauddin Hiya, 45, and Liyakat Ali, 40.

According to RAB, they were members of an extremist outfit.

“A RAB team raided the area based on a tip-off. Sensing their presence the extremists opened fire forcing the law enforcers to retaliate. The shootout lasted for almost half an hour,” the RAB commander said.

Two bodies and a firearm were found on the spot, he said, adding other members of the outfit managed to flee.
