As part of the new imitative, the civic body has given out corporate SIM cards to its 5216 cleaning staff. They have also been given an opportunity to buy mobile phones on easy installments.

Mayor Sayeed Khokon, speaking at a press conference at the Municipal Bhaban on Wednesday, said that the whereabouts of the workers could be monitored through the “location tracking system.”

Instructing cleaners to begin work in the evening, he said they should not be on the roads after 7am.

“I don’t want to see garbage collection being done in the morning during school and office hours.”

The mayor said it would be possible to keep the city clean only if five thousand workers worked simultaneously.

He also stressed the need to raise awareness on the issue.

“I will be as generous as possible to keep the city clean. But I will also be as strict as possible for the same cause,” the mayor said.

He said all efforts would be made to uplift the lives of the cleaning staff, but there would be no compromise on the issue of keeping the city clean.

Chief Executive Officer of the Dhaka South City Corporation Khan Mohammad Bilal, Grameenphone’s Chief Marketing Officer Mohammad Yasir Azman were also present, among others, at the press conference.
