Under an agreement signed on Tuesday, Japan will provide up to Tk319 million grant aid in the third phase of the Primary Education Development Programme (PEDPIII).

This phase commenced in 2011 and is scheduled to end in 2017.

Apart from financing, Japan will also provide training and technical support through its volunteers and policy advisors.

Japanese ambassador Masato Watanabe and ERD Senior Secretary Mohammad Mejbahuddin signed the ‘Exchange of Notes’ at the ERD.

JICA Chief Representative Mikio Hataeda signed the grant agreement.

The Japan embassy has said that with this primary education development programme, the target of universal primary enrolment in Bangladesh had been improved to 98 percent in 2015 from 76 percent in 1991.

Japan is one the largest development partners of Bangladesh.
