“These complaints are not true,” he told Parliament on Tuesday.

Media ran reports on the harassment people face while getting the NID information corrected or changed.

Referring to media reports, ruling Awami League MP Waresat Hussain Belal said sometimes people are forced to wait even a year for NID information correction.

In reply, Huq, who is responsible for the affairs of the Election Commission in Parliament, said, “Those who turn up with valid documents can get the task finished in a day.”

“The people who cannot submit valid documents for information correction require waiting longer. These people raise such complaints,” he added.

The minister said sometimes NID card holders come to the commission with pleas to lower or increase ages even by 10-15 years.

He said 613,289 people, or 0.61 percent of the voters, have applied for information correction or change since 2007, when works on the NID cards started.

Of them, information on 441,359 cards has been corrected, he added.

Use of NIDs has been made mandatory in several fields.
