The Chhatra League alleged that several rounds of gunshots had also been fired from inside a coaching centre run by the Shibir, the student front of the Jamaat-e-Islami, at the procession, which was taken out from Chittagong College.

Chawkbazar police said they had arrested two of the suspected attackers.

Meanwhile, in retaliation, Chhatra League activists ransacked the coaching centre an hour after the attack.

Witnesses said the Shibir men launched the attack when the BCL procession reached the Future Coaching Centre area on its way to Chawkbazar intersection at around 12:30pm.

Brickbats were hurled from a building in front of the coaching centre.

Nurul Azim Ronny, General Secretary of the Chittagong city committee of the Chhatra League, said Chittagong College unit leader Mahmudul Karim was injured in the attack.

He said shots had been fired from inside the coaching centre, which is run by the Shibir.
