The government said in a press statement on Thursday it would invoke the Information and Communication Technology Act for such claims made in the electronic media including Facebook.

It said rumourmongers could be jailed for 14 years and fined up to Tk 10 million.

But Section 57 of the Act, which provides for such punishment, had been widely criticised, prompting law minister Anisul Huq to recently promise its abrogation.

The Public Examination (Offences) Act allows a jail term of up to four years plus fines for anyone trying to leak question papers.

SSC and equivalent exams began on Feb 13. Over 1.65 million students are taking the test at 3,143 centres across Bangladesh.

Question paper leaks were rumoured in some of the previous public exams. But the government had dismissed them as being baseless.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said the ministry had taken foolproof measures to prevent question paper leaks.
