The High Court bench of justices M Enayetur Rahim and Amir Hossain fixed the date for the verdict after hearing their appeal and death reference on Wednesday.

In 2004, Choudhury came under grenade attack while coming out of Hazrat Shahjalal’s shrine in his hometown Sylhet. Assistant Sub-inspector Kamal Uddin died on spot and constables Rubel Ahmed and Habil Miah died from their wounds in a hospital.

Forty including Chowdhury and Sylhet’s deputy commissioner were injured in the May 21 attack.

Sylhet’s Speedy Trial Tribunal judge Samim Md Afzal Roy gave its verdict on Dec 23, 2008.

HuJI leaders Mufti Hannan, Sharif Shahedul Alam aka Bipul and Delwar Hossain aka Ripon got death sentence and life sentence were awarded to Mohibullah aka Mofizur Rahman and Mufti Moin Uddin aka Abu Zandal.

The death reference,  the plea for approving executions, reached the High Court in 2008. The convicts then filed for appeal in 2009.

All five of them were in prison, the prosecution has said. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state in the hearing on its ninth day on Wednesday.

The High Court bench began hearing the verdict on Jan 6 this year.
