Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Shamsun Nahar on Tuesday fixed Feb 28 as the new date for the charge framing, according to a court official.

The defendants pleaded for the deferment citing illness of Rony, son of a ruling party lawmaker, and his lawyer’s preoccupation with the Dhaka Bar Council election.

Rony, however, was present at the court. Additional Public Prosecutor Zahid Sarder, who is the chief counsel for the State in the case, did not come to the court.

Though Assistant Public Prosecutor Md Maksud was at the court, he did not challenge the defendants’ plea.

Rony is the son of Pinu Khan, acting general secretary of Mohila Awami League and an MP from the reserved seats in Parliament.

Auto-rickshaw driver Yakub Ali and rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim were critically injured when shots were randomly fired from a vehicle on the night of Apr 13 last year.

Both of them later died at a hospital.

Hakim’s mother on Apr 15 filled a case against some unidentified people in this connection.

Detectives arrested Rony from his Elephant Road residence in Dhaka on May 31.

On Jul 21, Sub-inspector Dipak Kumar Das of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police submitted the charge sheet in the case in which Rony was shown as the sole accused.

Police said Rony was inebriated and lost his patience after being stuck in a traffic snarl. In a fit of rage, he fired random shots from his pistol.
