Police launched the raid on Monday, a day after the deadline for installation of meters ended.
Right at the onset, the drive remained suspended for several hours to ensure that students taking SSC examinations, beginning on Monday, would not suffer.
CMP AC Shahidur Rahman told bdnews24.com that five teams are working to indentify auto-rickshaws that lack meters.
The drive will continue as long as such vehicles plough the streets.
Auto-rickshaw owners blamed the companies that install the meters for their missing the deadline.
“Those meters were supposed to be installed by the end of October last year.” said Haider Azam, president of the proprietors’ association.
Given the situation, the association has sought a two-month extension of the deadline.
“Meters have been installed in around 60 percent of the CNG auto-rickshaws. I hope the meter installation will be completed within a few days,” Azam said.
According to the association, there are around 13,000 registered CNG auto-rickshaws in the city. Another 8,000 such vehicles which have applied for registration are also in operation.
The local administration had tried to force auto-rickshaw owners to fix meters in their vehicles before, but backed out amid opposition by the owners and drivers and also due to technical difficulties.
