Cameras will be set up at Suhrawardy Udyan, TSC and Bangla Academy, Dhaka Metropolitan Police said in a media conference on Sunday.

The output from the cameras will be monitored at two control rooms at Suhrawardy Udyan and Bangla Academy, DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said.

Two top officers will monitor the camera surveillance in shifts around the clock, he said.

“Immediate steps will be taken if something suspicious is found,” he said.

All the footage will be saved, he added.

According to the DMP chief, the security steps this year are foolproof.

“We have taken the steps to assure foolproof security so that people can travel to and from the fair in festive mood,” he said.

Metal-detecting archways will be placed at all three entrances at Suhrawardy Udyan and two at Bangla Academy, he said.

“Women police and technical experts will also be there. Everyone will be searched,” he said.

Concern over security in the fair is high this year after the murder of writer-blogger Avijit Roy some hundred yards from the fair last year. Roy’s wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya was also injured in the attack.

“We’ve strengthened the security considering past events. Dhaka City Corporation will arrange adequate illumination from Shahbagh to Doyel Chattar including TSC, Dhaka University, Suhrawardy Udyan and Bangla Academy,” DMP chief Mia said.

Plainclothesmen will be there along with the uniformed police, he said.
