Police claim that they were attempting to spread religious tension by placing torn pages of the Qur’an at local mosques.

According to Chittagong Police Superintendent AKM Hafiz Akter, the Shibir men were trying to indulge in anti-government propaganda through spreading religious hatred on social media.

SP Akter said that two of the arrested activists confessed to their involvement before a judicial magistrate’s court.

At a press briefing on Thursday, Chittagong police said that they had arrested Shibir leaders and activists Rayhan Uddin Muhammad Asad Ullah, Riyadul Islam Niloy, Aminul Islam Tipu and Md Arman during several raids in Satkania.

Niloy and Asad Ullah revealed the names of Jamaat Islami and Shibir leaders masterminding the propaganda, added SP Akter.

Chittagong’s Assistant Police Superintendent AKM Emran Bhuiyan said the culprits had targeted the Hindu and Buddhist dominated areas of Satkania and Lohagarha Upazilas and tore up copies of the Quran in 19 mosques there.

ASP Bhuiyan said police had identified those involved and were now conducting drives to arrest them.
