BCS General Education Association Secretary General IK Selim Ullah Khandaker told bdnews24.com that they made the decision on Wednesday afternoon, after the government assured them that their demands would be met.

He said the agitation programmes have been suspended until Feb 29.

Khandaker said the teachers would go for agitation again unless any progress towards fulfilment of their demands was evident by that time.

He said the principal secretary to the prime minister and the education secretary had assured them that the government would accept their demands.

Around 15,000 teachers of government colleges and similar other institutions across the country went on a three-day ‘cease work’ programme on Tuesday to press for their demands.

They have threatened to boycott academic activities from Feb 6 to 11 unless their demands are met by Feb 5. They plan to go for an indefinite ‘cease work’ programme from Feb 23 in case the demands still remain unfulfilled.

Leaders of the BCS General Education Association held a meeting with Education Secretary Sohrab Hossain on Wednesday at the Secretariat.

Teachers of 270 government colleges, three Alia madrasas, 14 teachers’ training colleges and 16 commercial colleges have been protesting against the Eighth National Pay Scale since it was formalised by a gazette notification.
