They say he was wanted on several charges of violence.

The 'shootout' took place early on Sunday at the district town, said local police OC Ahsan Habib.

The dead has been identified as Ramjan Ali, 42.

“Ramjan (Ali) was a Jamaat activist and he is accused in several cases of violence, including attacking police,” said OC Habib.

Police say Ali was arrested a day ago and on Sunday, they took him along during a raid to recover firearms at the town’s Bandar area.
“Ramjan’s accomplices fired on the police posse and they fired back. Ramjan was hit during the exchange of fire. He was taken to the Meherpur Sadar Hospital where the doctors declared him dead,” said  OC Habib.
He said two rounds of ammunition and a locally made firearm were recovered from the spot.
