There had also been three assailants in the murder of a policeman at a checkpoint in Ashulia, an Italian in Dhaka, and that of a Japanese in Rangpur.

The attackers had come and fled on motorcycles in those earlier incidents.

But, this time, in Bogra on Thursday, the miscreants came on foot and fled by climbing over a wall of the Al-Mostefa mosque, witnesses said.

They shot the muezzin dead and left the imam and two others injured.

Several witnesses said the three young assailants fled after spraying bullets before anyone could realise what had happened.

They said one of the attackers was dressed in topi and Panjabi while the two others wore check shirts and pants.

The deceased was identified as muezzin Moazzem Hossain, 70.

The injured are imam Shahiunur Rahman, 60, and Taher Mistri, 50, and Aftab Ali, 40.
