Both Chowdhury, the wartime terror of Chittagong, and Mujahid, the murderer of intellectuals and Al-Badr commander, led Bangladesh’s ‘journey backward’ after the assassination of founding father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sarker said.

Ganajagaran Mancha came into being two years ago through a movement of tens of thousands demanding the maximum punishment for the crimes against humanity like genocide committed during the 1971 Liberation War.

BNP leader Chowdhury and Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mujahid were hanged in the first hours of Sunday.

Sarker said, “The evil forces plotted to take Bangladesh backward through the assassination of the Father of the Nation three years after the birth of Bangladesh.”

“These executions will be a milestone in reviving the spirit of the Liberation War in Bangladesh,” he added.

Ganajagaran Mancha activists have been celebrating the execution at Shahbagh, where they have been staying since Friday.

They showered each other with flower petals to celebrate the moment.

Sarker thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for trying the war criminals.

“The responsibility of the trial was not on a particular group or the prime minister alone…the 160 million people of Bangladesh are the plaintiffs in these cases,” he said

“The execution is the victory of the people, the victory of the spirit of the Liberation War,” he added.
