The party called the general strike to protest against the Supreme Court’s rejection of a review petition of its Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid to commute his death penalty.

Former Al-Badr militia commander Mujahid was sentenced to death for the killing of intellectuals and murder and torture of Hindus in 1971.

Jamaat activists even did not take out any procession in support of the shutdown on Thursday in Sylhet.

Police say they have beefed up security.

“Three platoons of BGB and RAB are patrolling the streets,” Metropolitan Police’s Additional Commissioner Rahmat Ullah told bdnews24.com.

Traffic on city streets was normal but only a few long-haul buses left the district as number of passengers was less, operators said.

Train operation was normal, Sylhet Railway Station’s Manager Abdur Razzak said.
