Shringla is currently serving as Indian Ambassador to Thailand.

The Indian High Commission confirmed the new appointment but it did not specify any date of his arrival in Dhaka.

However, a Bangladesh foreign ministry source said Shringla was likely to take charge as new high commissioner in December.

Shringla, who hails from Darjeeling district of West Bengal, is regarded as one of the 'rising stars' in the Indian Foreign Service.

In his career spanning nearly 30 years, he has served in Indian missions in Paris, Hanoi and Tel Aviv.

He has also served as Minister/Counsellor in the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, New York and as Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and Durban, South Africa.

Prior to taking up his post in Thailand, Shringla had served in the Ministry of External Affairs as Joint Secretary (Director General) responsible for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and the Maldives.

He had also headed the United Nations, Political and SAARC Divisions in the ministry.

Saran is likely to be made India’s envoy to Russia.

During his stint in Dhaka, two countries exchanged enclaves to settle long-pending boundary issue and signed many historic agreements.
