They are Ali Akbar, 50, president of the Jamaat’s Balirhat unit, and Imam Hossain, 42, president of its Kalamia Bazar chapter.

Police said they were wanted in cases of subversion and had gone into hiding.

The two men were detained on Tuesday night, said Mohammad Mohsin, OC, Bakalia Police Station.

Jamaat activists and members of its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, had walked in a procession in the port city on Tuesday, demanding the release of war criminal Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, who happens to be the party’s secretary general.

They sent photos of the demonstration to various media units, the police officer told bdnews24.com.

“Imam and Akbar were identified in the photos and were later arrested from their houses in Kalamia Bazar and Balirhat.”

Jamaat men used Akbar’s house as an office, he said. “Several organisational documents were seized from there.”

Another 12 BNP and Jamaat activists were held in Sitakunda and Lohagarha, said Additional Superintendent of Police (Special branch) Naimul Hasan.
