Meghna fishermen start looking for Hilsha after ban expires

Fishermen in Chandpur have started catching Hilsha on the Meghna River after a 15-day ban imposed by government expired on Friday.

The government banned Hilsha catching between Sep 25 and Oct 9 that coincided with the spawning season.
 
Fishing trawlers started looking for Hilsha on the Meghna River since Friday midnight, immediately after the ban was over.
 
The ban is being imposed during this time every year to allow for proper breeding that would boost production.
 
Meanwhile, 291 fishermen were detained in Chandpur for catching Hilsha during the ban, said authorities.

A total of 829 kg of the fish were recovered in the 114 raids on the river during the ban, said Chandpur’s Fisheries Officer Md Shafiqur Rahman.
A fine of Tk 190,000 was imposed on 34 fishermen for violating the ban and another 257 were sentenced to various terms in prison, he added.
Chandpur River Police’s Additional Superintendent (ASP) Md Nuruzzaman said they conducted regular raids on the Meghna River during the 15 days of ban.
