The speech and hearing impaired workers were struck by an oncoming train as they made their way.

The incident took place on the Jamalpur Commuter Bhurulia Rail Bridge on Friday morning, said Assistant Sub-Inspector Dadan Mia of Joydebpur Railway Police outpost.

Md Ramjan Ali, 30, and ‘Parvez’ died on the spot.

Two of the injured have been identified as Momin Mia, 30, and ‘Sumon’.

They worked at the Keya Knit Composite factory in Konabarhia’s Jorun.

They were on their way to work after taking part in a Tabligh sermon at Bhurulia’s Markas Mosque.

The factory’s Administrative Officer Md Samiul Bashar said a group of men, including the victims, had gone to the mosque on Thursday for preaching Tablighi teachings.

He said he was accompanying them as their assistant.

The victims left the mosque in the morning for work.

A Jamalpur-bound commuter train was approaching the bridge on Chilai River as they were crossing it.

“Ramjan and Parvez died on the spot after being hit by the train,” he said.

The others were injured, as they jumped from the bridge.

Locals rescued them and sent them to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College and Hospital.

The rail bridge is 35-ft long. Locals say the victims were using it, although there is another bridge nearby.
