Five die, five more injured as bus hits auto-rickshaw head-on in Chittagong

Five people have been killed and at least as many others injured when a bus smashed an auto-rickshaw head-on at Patia Upazila in Chittagong.

Four of the dead and the injured, all passengers of the three-wheeler, include members of a family and their relatives, police say.

The accident took place on the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Highway at Mansar Tek at around 12pm on Friday, Patia highway police outpost’s Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Shafiqul Azam told bdnews24.com.

The deceased were identified as auto-rickshaw driver Md Saiful, 25, passengers Rupona Sen, 25, Minton Sen Bulu, 26, Anik Sen, 5, and Kakon Sen, 3.

The injured, Anik’s father Anjan Sen, 40, Arpan Sen, 6, Apon Sen, 7, Anamika Sen, 25, and Kanchan Sen, 32, were admitted at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Anik, Arpan and Apon are the children of Anjan and Rupona while Kakon is the son of Kanchan and Anamika.

Anjan and Kanchan are brothers. Minton is their cousin.

Quoting locals, highway police SI ‘Masud’ said the Cox’s Bazar-bound bus had collided with the Patia-bound auto-rickshaw, killing Minton and Kakon on the spot.

CMCH police outpost’s SI Zahirul Islam told bdnews24.com seven injured were rushed to the hospital at around 2pm.

Of them, Rupona, Anik and Saiful were declared dead upon arrival, he added.

Anjan’s another cousin, Subrata Sen told bdnews24.com at CMCH that both Anjan and Kanchan lived abroad. Anjan came to Bangladesh two months ago and Kanchan arrived on Tuesday.

“They were on way to Kanchan’s in-laws’ house at Banshkhali Upazila’s Jaldi with their families when the accident took place,” he said.
