Ramna Police Station OC Moshiur Rahman said Rabiul Islam Nayan, held on Thursday, was the joint secretary of BNP’s student front Jatiyatabadi Chhatar Dal’s Mohammadpur unit.

He claimed Nayan used to lead criminal operations from Moghbazar as Bain’s ‘second-in-command’.

Rahman said police had been tipped-off about Nayan staying in Room 304 of ‘Hotel Boikali’ with two of his men.

“Shots were exchanged after he opened the door with a pistol in hand when we knocked,” the OC said. “He was injured in the skirmish.”

Police say they found a pistol and five rounds of ammunition at the place.

Nayan has been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Police say CCTV footage showed another person accompanying Nayan.

“We’re trying to identify and arrest him,” OC Rahman added.

Although Nayan is accused in cases of extortion and violence, police could not confirm whether his name appeared in cases filed against Bain.

Hotel Boikali’s acting Manager ‘Ashik’ told bdnews24.com Nayan would often check in and leave after a short stay. “We did not charge him,” he added.

Hotel staffer Monu Mia said police went to Room 304 with the manager at around 10:30am. Several gunshots were heard after the gate was opened.

“Police took away with them a boarder named ‘Nayan’ in a bloody state,” he added.
