The report, compiled after studying 80 countries, finds only Iraq behind Bangladesh.

Bangladesh scored 14.1 out of 100 in the 2015 Quality of Death Index by London-based EIU and war-ravaged Iraq ranked the worst with 12.5.

Philippines, Nigeria and Myanmar make up the rest in the bottom five, ahead of Bangladesh and Iraq but below others.

UK is right at the top with a score of 93.9. China figures among the worst ten.

Those among the top ten behind UK are Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Taiwan, Germany, Netherlands, the US and France.

Among the South Asian nations, Sri Lanka ranked 65th and India 67th.

Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives were not covered by the EIU study.

The report says national policies were crucial for improving palliative care.

It  recommended subsidies to make medical treatment affordable.

“Each country will need to craft its own unique approach by identifying the most significant gaps, addressing regulatory and resource constraints, and forming partnerships between government, academia, and nonprofit groups,” says the EIU study.

Palliative care brings a holistic approach to specialised medical care for those who are terminally ill.
