Police arrest three in Noakhali, Lakshmipur on 1971 war crimes charges

Police have arrested two men in Noakhali and another one in Lakshmipur on charges of 1971 war-time atrocities to aid Pakistan army.

The two from Noakhali are alleged Razakars Amir Ahmed alias Amir Ali and Joynal Abedin, said the district’s Superintendent of Police Ilias Sharif.

The one nabbed in Lakshmipur’s Ramgoti Upazila is Md Yusuf, said Ramgoti Police Station OC Iqbal Hossain.

He said Yusuf, 70, was arrested at Hajiganj in the Upazila on Monday evening.

They were arrested after the International Crimes Tribunal issued warrants for all of them earlier in the morning.

SP Sharif said Amir, 69, was picked up from his residence at the district town’s North Fakirpur in the afternoon.
Abedin, 70, was nabbed from his home at Sadar Upazila’s Syedpur village later in the evening.
Both of them were in police custody and would be transferred to the war crimes tribunal in Dhaka on Tuesday, Sharif added.
Sudharampur police OC Anwar Hossain told bdnews24.com: “Amir Ali is the second on the list of Razakars of the district.”
Razakar was an auxiliary force created by the Pakistan army during the war to thwart the Bangali struggle for freedom.
