“After the municipality polls in December, we plan to hold the Union Parishad elections. The EC secretariat has been told to prepare for it,” Election Commissioner Abdul Mobarak told bdnews24.com.

The tenure of the Union Parishads will end between March and July. The EC might announce the schedule in January, said the election commissioner.

EC officials said that the local government ministry has sent them all the details of 4,553 Union Parishads in Bangladesh.

“We will go through them and prepare a detailed report,” said EC Assistant Secretary Ashafkur Rahman.

Union Parishad elections have to be held within six months after the expiry of its previous tenure.

Bangladesh has held eight Union Parishad elections between 1973 and 2011.

As the EC is updating the electoral rolls, the new voters will not be able to exercise their franchise in municipality polls in December.

But that might not be the case for Union Parishad polls as EC officials said the updated voters list may be published on Jan 31 next year.
