The teachers stayed away from classes and held rallies to press their demands for the last few months.

“We’ll solve the problem through talks,” Nurul Islam Nahid told reporters on Sunday. “A meeting will take place on Oct 6 with them.”

The government cleared the eighth pay scale last month with basic pay at a maximum of Tk 78,000 and a minimum of Tk 8,250.

Selection grade professors enjoyed the top grade in the seventh pay scale along with secretaries and major generals. The new pay scale did not separately mention the selection-grade professors.

The move upset public university teachers who have been demonstrating for the last three months.

They have also been demanding a separate pay scale for university teachers and review of the new pay scale, among others.
