Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abu Shafayat Muhammad Shahedul Islam said he received a faxed copy of the suspension order on Thursday evening.

The order from the Local Government Division said Ahmed was suspended as the court accepted the chargesheet in the case over the attack.

Miscreants vandalised and set ablaze temples and houses belonging to Buddhists on the night of Sept 29, 2012 following a fake Facebook post.

Seven temples, 30 houses and shops were set on fire in the mayhem. Hundreds of houses and shops were also vandalised and looted.

Locals accused Tofail of leading the attacks. He was arrested on Nov 28 last year.

Later he secured bail from the High Court.
