The former finance minister in Awami League’s 1996-2001 government, Kibria was killed in 2005.

Sylhet’s Speedy Trial Tribunal on Wednesday recorded the statement of Habiganj-2 MP and Awami League district unit’s General Secretary Abdul Majid Khan, who is the case’s plaintiff.

Special Public Prosecutor Kishore Kumar Kar said that Judge Md Maqbul Ahsan heard the testimony from 11am to 1pm.

He said 171 witnesses would depose before the court in this case.

The court has fixed Oct 21 and 22 for the next deposition of witnesses.

On Sep 13, 32 people, including former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar and expelled Sylhet mayor Ariful Haq Chowdhury, were indicted in the case.

Of the 14 arrested accused, 13 including Babar were present in the court, Kar said. Eight accused who are now out on bail too appeared before the court.

Chowdhury could not be produced before the court due to illness, Kar added.

Five persons, including Kibria, died in a grenade attack on a public rally at Habiganj’s Baidya Bazar on Jan 27, 2005.

Abdul Majid Khan had filed two cases – one over the killings and the other under the Explosives Act – on that very night.

After three rounds of probe, the investigation officer, Sylhet’s ASP (CID) Meherun Nesa Parul filed supplementary chargesheet against 32 persons by including 11 new names on Dec 21, 2014.

The newly accused included Ariful Haq Chowdhury, BNP chief Khaleda Zia's former political secretary Harris Chowdhury and Habiganj Municipal Mayor Golam Kibria Gaus.

Habiganj District and Sessions Judge Md Atabullaha transferred the murder case to the Speedy Trial Tribunal on Jun 11.
