“Those responsible for this act must be brought to justice,” the 28-country bloc said in a statement on Tuesday issued in Brussels.

Earlier in the morning, the EU ambassador in Dhaka condemned the murder and urged the law enforcement agencies “to promptly investigate this barbaric aggression and bring the perpetrators to justice”.

Cesare Tavella, employed by the Netherlands-based NGO ICCO, was gunned down on Monday evening at the heart of the diplomatic enclave in Gulshan amid the UK and Australia’s security concerns.

Radical Islamist militant group Islamic State has reportedly claimed responsibility. The government said they had no credible information in this regard.

The EU said Tavella was working in Bangladesh “to improve the lives of local citizens”. “We are deeply saddened by the news of the murder.”

“We will stand firm in upholding the values of solidarity and life,” read the statement.

The 28-country bloc of which Italy is a member also conveyed its deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
