The car had been lying in the Bhagarpara police station since it was seized by police during an attempted carjack.

Constable Mizan of Jhikorgacha police station, nabbed on Wednesday for allegedly trying to carjack the vehicle, has vanished from custody a day after he was held.

Mizan had been taken into custody from the Dhalgram road in Bagharpara Upazila and the car moving from Khulna to Narail was seized.

But the car was searched after police got suspicious during Mizan's interrogation.

OC Ahmed said the car was searched in presence of Additional Superintendent of Police KM Ariful Haque.

"110 gold bars hidden in eleven packets were recovered from the car."

They weigh 12.83 kg.

One Towhidur Rahman Khan was driving the car from Narail's Kalnaghat to Khulna before Mizan and his accomplices waylaid the car and tried to take it away by force.

OC Ahmed said police are now looking for Towhidur Rahman Khan who hails from Khulna.

Khan had filed a case with Bagharpara police on Wednesday night. He had alleged that his car was waylaid by five to six people on two motorcycles near Jessore's Gabtala Bridge.

Khan said in his complaint that the motorcycle-riders stopped his car saying they were from the Detective Branch and wanted to search the car for contraband gold.

Constable Mizan whipped out his pistol and silenced everyone as he drove off the car.

Then at the Dhalgram road, a team from Bagharpara police station stopped the car.

While others fled, Mizan was nabbed. Police found his claim to be a police constable correct.

He identified his accomplices as NSI watcher in Satkhira 'Lipton', Shujanagar police station's constable Rubaiyat Hossain and two others named 'Mosharraf' and 'Ashraf' from Abhaynagar.

But he fled from Bagharpara police station the next day.

Bagharpara OC Qayyum Ali Sardar, ASI Nasir and Constable Walliur Rahman were suspended after Mizan fled for dereliction of duty.
