Her family claims she had turned down the boy’s proposal to have a relationship with him.

The assault reportedly took place on Aug 26, when the girl was returning home from school.

One of the boy’s classmates purportedly recorded the incident on mobile phone and uploaded it on Facebook, triggering uproar.

An organisation of the town’s residents staged a human-chain protest in the morning and demanded punishment for the harasser.

Locals apprehended the boy and handed him over to police on Friday, Model Police Station OC Najim Uddin Chowdhury said.

The victim’s father has lodged a police complaint against the boy and several others, he added.

The boy is a student at a Habiganj school and the girl is an eighth-grader at a girls’ school.

They live in the town’s Rajanagar.

The girl’s father alleged the boy used to stalk his daughter often and the harassment did not stop even after they had taken the matter up with his family.

The boy, speaking to reporters at the police station, claimed he had acted out of vengeance after a relative of the girl slapped him in front of his school several days ago.

He, however, said he did not know who recorded the incident.
