They are Rajib Baroi, a third-year Dhaka University student of Pali and Buddhist Studies, the same university’s Bangabandhu Hall staff ‘Sohel’, Surja Sen Hall canteen’s staff ‘Habib’ and JnU student Amit Kumar Das.

Rajib was the library secretary of the Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Jagannath Hall unit before being suspended eight months ago.

Amit is also an activist of the ruling Awami League’s student wing.

Police presented the four before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Detective Branch Inspector Md Wahiduzzaman had sought a 10-day remand for each. The court scrapped the bail plea of the accused and granted police three days to grill them.

Rajib and Amit were arrested Monday evening after the man who was mugged spotted them and called the police.

Theatre activist Ansar Ali Limon and his female friend were attacked by several youths inside the Suhrawardy Udyan on Aug 16.

Rajib and Amit and their accomplices had first robbed them of their cash taken cash, mobile phones and debit cards.

The muggers threatened to rape the woman when Limon refused to divulge his debit card PIN code.
They let Limon and his friend go after two of the muggers went to the Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited (DBBL) ATM booth at the TSC on DU campus and withdrew Tk 50,000.

Case investigation officer Md Wahiduzzaman, however, in his remand plea did not mention mugging by threatening rape.

Limon had asked DBBL for the ATM booth’s CCTV footage at the time of the incident. He then handed over the footage to police.

Limon, who had seen the footage, said he called police after spotting Rajib and Amit sitting on a rickshaw near TSC on Monday.

The Dhaka University on Tuesday  temporarily expelled Rajib for his involvement in the crime.
