Rajan murder: Court orders advertisement

A Sylhet court has ordered publication of advertisement in newspapers asking absconders of the Rajan murder case to surrender within a week.

First Metropolitan Magistrate Shahedul Karim gave the order on Monday, police’s Additional Commissioner (Prosecution) Abdul Ahad said.

The absconders are Sheikhpara’s Kamrul Islam, his brother Shamim Ahmed and Pavel Ahmed.

The same court on Aug 24 took into cognisance the case’s chargesheet, issued arrest warrants for them and ordered their properties to be confiscated.

On July 8, 13-year-old Rajan was tortured to death in Sylhet’s Kumargaon, allegedly for stealing a rickshaw van. A video clip of the torture  went viral on the internet and caused nationwide outrage.

Islam fled to Saudi Arabia a day after the killing where he is currently in police custody .

The investigation officer SMP Inspector Suranjit Talukder submitted the chargesheet on Aug 16 accusing 13 persons for involvvement in the murder.

The accused are Kamrul Islam, his brothers Ali Haider, Shamim Ahmed and Muhit Alam, local watchman Moyna Mia, Dulal Mia, Ruhul Amin, Taj Uddin Ahmed Badal, Nur Mia, Firoz Mia, Ajmat Ullah, Pavel Ahmed and Ayaj Ali.

Islam and his brothers Shamim and Pavel were referred to as absconders in the chargesheet.

Muhit’s wife Lipi Begum and brother-in-law Islami Hossain were initially arrested after the murder. But they were not included in the chargesheet as police did not find any proof of their involvement.
