Inspector SN Halder, the border force’s Malda zone spokesperson, said they were caught while trying to smuggle 170 cows into Bangladesh through Shovapur Border outpost near Farakka early on Sunday.

He added seven of them were Bangladeshis who had illegally crossed into Indian territory.

The BSF official claimed they belonged to a trans-border ring of cattle smugglers and have already been handed over to Baishnabnagar police.

The illegal cattle trade between the two countries is a key reason for border tension and incidents of BSF opening fire on the smugglers make up for most of the border killings.

Various parties, including BSF officials, have called for legalising cross-border cattle trade.
