“Initially we have fixed 285 spots in the Dhaka South and 208 in North,” said Local Government Division Secretary Abdul Malek on Thursday.

“The number may rise, but no one will be forced to use those spots.”

He added that 20 spots were designated in the Chittagong City Corporation.

A campaign will be run three days before the Eid to raise awareness, said Malek .

“The city corporation councilors will also run campaign.”

He said they would write to the religious affairs ministry and Islamic Foundation to instruct mosques to raise awareness.

The designated slaughtering grounds will have butchers, cleaning staff as well as an ‘Imam’ to conduct the slaughtering of sacrificial animals during the Eid.

Last year, the government approved 18 cattle-markets in Dhaka, but the number would be cut short to 16 this year, said the local government secretary.

No cattle-markets will be allowed on railway tracks, near hospitals or streets leading to medical facilities, he added.
